Overview
NGC 3576 is one of the great sculptures of the southern Milky Way. Roughly 9,000 light years away in Carina, out in the Sagittarius arm of our galaxy, it is a furnace of star formation wrapped in glowing loops of gas some hundred light years across. John Herschel swept it up from the Cape of Good Hope in 1834, and its structure proved so intricate that its brightest pieces ended up with NGC numbers of their own.
Its popular name is far younger. See the great arcs as a raised arm and a torch, and the Statue of Liberty appears. I framed it upright, the way I see it best: a vast dome of crimson filaments arching over a brilliant core, like a bell jar set over a fire.
Those arcs are the story. Deep inside the nebula, young, massive stars are pouring out fierce winds and radiation, inflating shells of gas and driving them outward into the surrounding cloud. Where the expanding gas meets denser material it piles into the bright ridges and pillars at the base of the dome. Scattered through the glow are small, inky Bok globules, knots of dust dense enough to be quietly collapsing into the next generation of stars. The nebula is both the wreckage of star birth and the raw material for more.
This is an SHO-enhanced RGB rendition built from nearly 31 hours of data. The tones are anchored in true color, with hydrogen deepening the reds and magentas of the arcs, oxygen lighting the core in silvery blue and tracing the delicate blue cap over the top of the dome, and sulfur carving out the fine filaments. Dark tendrils of foreground dust thread the upper field, and the stars keep their natural gold and blue against the glow.
What holds me here is the sense of motion. Nothing in this frame is still. Every loop is an explosion in slow motion, caught at a single instant of a story that has been unfolding for millions of years.
